Almost lost in the flurry of Great American Beer Festival medals being handed out this past weekend was even more great news for Montana Breweries.
Tamarack Brewing Co. (Lakeside) won first place for Headwall Double IPA in the 18th Annual Alpha King Challenge held in Denver, CO on October 7 to coincide with the Great American Beer Festival. Head brewer Kyle Carlson was named the Alpha King, receiving $500 in cash and the opportunity for the Tamarack crew to appear in a feature video in Sweden by the financial sponsor Sambla!
Uberbrew (Billings) took second place with Alpha Force RapDom Triple IPA. Uberbrew and head brewer Mark Hastings won the competition last year with Alpha Force Double Tap Tactical IPA, the first black IPA to win the event. It was an incredible weekend for Uberbrew which also won four medals in the Great American Beer Festival competition along with being named Small Brewing Co./Brewer of the Year.
The Alpha King Challenge is organized by YCH Hops, Brewing News Publications and Three Floyds Brewing Co. The competition is limited to 150 beers and each brewery is allowed to submit a maximum of two beers. Entries are judged on overall quality and balance of flavor and must have a minimum of 60 IBUs.
