Fox News Encourages Readers to Celebrate Lager Day . . . By Drinking an Ale

Add this one to the “you’ve got to be kidding me” department.  Stumbling across my beer wires this morning was the latest in the continuous line of “best beer” click bait stories.  This one, from Fox News, offers up the “Top 10 Winter Beers for National Lager Day.” *

First of all, I had no clue December 10 was National Lager Day.  Me thinks National Lager Day needs a better press agent.  Unlike IPAs, Stouts and Belgian beers carried exclusively by one distributor, Lager Day just ain’t getting the news out. And why stop short at National lager day. They make lagers in other countries, too.

Second of all, it’s an interesting list: Full Sail Wassail, Widmer Ginger Barrel-Aged Brrrbon, 21st Amendment Fireside Chat Winter Spiced Ale, Ommegang Abbey Ale, North Coast PranQster Belgian-Style Golden Ale, Affligem Noel Christmas Ale, Stone Suede Imperial Porter, No-Li Winter Warmer, Deschutes Jubelale, and Unibroue Quelque Chose.

Good list.  Of ales.  Not a single lager in the bunch.

To be . . . *cough* . . . fair, the article begins with this introduction: “December 10 is National Lager Day. When you’re not tasting your favorite lagers, we recommend spending the rest of the day stocking up on beer for the long, cold winter ahead.”

So, there you have it. Get out and enjoy National Lager Day with a good ole’ winter ale.

On second thought, add this one to the “how to invite ridicule with a stupid disconnect between headline and content” department.  Presumably, someone had already written the click bait article on winter beers and the copy editor/headline creator unwisely decided to play off the news that today was National Lager Day.

Except none of us knew it was National Lager Day.

Wait. Draft Magazine apparently did.  Today they’re featuring their own list of ten actual lagers to try.  Then again, they don’t mention anything about that National Lager Day thing.

So what day is it?  A good day to drink beer.
